Day 4

Day 4 – Your Favorite Book

While I am quite the bookworm I never really have the opportunity to read that often.  Generally when I read something it’s because someone else has recommended it to me.  Most recently I read the Twilight series and much to my surprise I actually enjoyed it.

However, for a book to be my most favorite book of any that I’ve ever read it really has to have touched my life in some way.  Meaning, I changed from reading this book.

When I was a freshman in high school (grade 9) we did a segment in my English class regarding the Holocaust.  I think this class when my interest in the subject first really started.  The Holocaust was so baffling to me, and I really wanted to learn everything I could about it.  Not really for understanding, just to hear the stories of these people.  Their story, their plight, it really gripped me and I think it will always hold onto me.

In that English class we read Night by Elie Wiesel

If you’ve never read this book – you should.  It’s fairly short, and very easy reading – but it is a story that will stay with you your whole life.  I’ve had the opportunity to read other of Elie’s works and I will still say that Night is my absolute favorite.

Never shall I forget that night, the first night in camp, that turned my life into one long night seven times sealed.
Never shall I forget that smoke.
Never shall I forget the small faces of the children whose bodies I saw transformed into smoke under a silent sky.
Never shall I forget those flames that consumed my faith for ever.
Never shall I forget the nocturnal silence that deprived me for all eternity of the desire to live.
Never shall I forget those moments that murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams to ashes.
Never shall I forget those things, even were I condemned to live as long as God Himself.
Never.
